Arlington National Cemetery

The most famous cemetery in the United States, Arlington National Cemetery is the final resting place for members of the U.S. military, including President John F. Kennedy. Visitors pay respect at his gravesite, where the Eternal Flame burns bright. Funerals do take place here, but it is also open to tourists wishing to visit the Tombs of the Unknown, and the many monuments and memorials. These include Memorial Amphitheater, the Korean War Contemplative Bench, and the Women in Military Service for America. Arlington is a 20-minute drive from our Fairfax hotel.

  • When was the Arlington National Cemetery first established?

The grounds of the Cemetery belonged to the family of Mary Anna Custis Lee, the wife of Confederate Army General Robert E. Lee, and was known as Arlington House. During the Civil War, after the house and land were surrendered to the Union Army, it became a U.S. military cemetery. It's 150th anniversary as such was marked in 2014, with many ceremonies, special tours and events.
  • For the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, when is the "Changing of the Guard" and why is it significant?

While the Cemetery is open to the public the guard at the Tomb of the Unknowns changes every half-hour. After closing, the guards change every two hours. The Tomb is guarded 24 hours a day by a special platoon of Tomb Guards in the 3rd U.S. Infantry Regiment showing honor and respect for the unknown soldiers who gave their lives in service and defense of the United States.
